Celebration Saturday

Discover. Play. Build.
I'm so happy that Ruth Ayres started a Celebrate Link-Up on her blog!!!  I will be joining the celebration every Saturday!!

1.  This is just a little thing, but I thought it was cute.  On Tuesday I wore heels to school (which I rarely do), and I was walking down the hallway when a student joined me, walking by my side.  "I love the sound a teacher's heels makes clicking down a hallway," she said, smiling and looking up at me.  I smiled back and loved that she celebrated something so seemingly small.  I thought about all the sounds of school that bring comfort and joy, and it made me happy.

2.  Our Scholastic book order came this week, and I was able to add a lot of great titles to our classroom library!  The kids were so excited.  I admit, I grabbed a few to read before the kids got ahold of them because I know I won't see them again for awhile.  I wanted to read A Snicker of Magic because there's already lots of buzz about it, Threatened by Eliot Schrefer, and The Shadow Throne.  One of my students already read The Shadow Throne and is mad at me for not reading it yet because she's dying to talk about it. ;-)

3.  I love that my daughter, Libby, has taken up knitting.  I'm getting texts with pictures of her projects.  Both my daughters have creative, artistic talent.  Katie is a talented painter.  Creativity is something to celebrate!

4.  Speaking of knitting, have you seen this article?  Love it!

5.  I celebrate everyone's Facebook movies!  I think they're really cool.  I don't think there's a way to attach them to a blog post, but you can certainly enjoy them on Facebook.

6.  I loved seeing all these literacy giants talking about The Giver!  How exciting that it's going to be a movie.

7.  I also enjoyed seeing the behind-the-scenes of the ALA Youth Media Awards.  Mr. Schu shared this video on his blog this week.

8.  I saw this great dog on "Good Morning America" this week.

9.  We had another snow day and a two-hour delay this week.  I think I'm over celebrating those!  Ha.  I'd like to have a full week with my students!  One thing I will celebrate, though, is that many of my fifth graders were sad that we got those days because they told me they don't like missing my class.  I love hearing that!

10.  I celebrate all the Olympic athletes!  This is an interesting video to show students.

I hope you're celebrating lots this week, too!

  1. I loved ordering from Scholastic as a student! Loved the order form, everything about it, in fact! When we get special orders for our store, I wish I can read all the ones that catch my eye before shelving them! I just read a YA novel called When I was the Greatest where one of the teenage boys knit to control his Tourette's.

  3. Hi Holly,
Your story about wearing high heels made me smile. When I am in certain schools the teachers will say that they can tell it is me by the sound of my heels.

    Happy Saturday!

    1. I love that. I feel like I should write a poem about the sounds of school. It's going to have to brew in my mind for awhile. ;-)

    1. I told her I wouldn't want to knit because then I couldn't read, but I have a book club friend who listens to audios while she knits. :-)

  5. What a great bookstack! We just added Snicker of Magic to or stack as well! We both used to knit --need to find time to get that back into our lives. It is great to create something with your hands.

    1. I call it a "flow" activity for her. Have you read the book FLOW: The Psychology of Optimal Experience by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi? I read it in one of my classes for my gifted endorsement.and loved it.

  10. I had to forward the knitting article to a parent who spearheaded teaching knitting to our 6th graders a few years ago. We knitted hats for the homeless. I loved reading and watching my students knitting. There's so much more to explore in your post when I find the time.

    1. What a great idea - it would make a wonderful after school club! And how great that they made it into a service project!

  11. You have such a colorful mixture of celebrations. My favorite is your celebration of the creative talent of your daughters. In Estonia, when someone gives a knitted item as a gift, we say that they have knitted sunshine in it.

  12. So much to celebrate this week, Holly! Love the stack of books - I, too, am excited about A Snicker of Magic! Love the clicky heels story! I didn't know they were making a movie about The Giver - not sure how they will capture all that power in 2 hours but we'll see! I am a knitter - and used to knit sweaters for my boyfriends. My mom called it the "knitting curse" - because I'd get halfway through the sweater and we'd break up! After many years, and a basement full of half knit sweaters (actually I think there were only 3!), I met the man who would become my husband. My mom's advice: DO NOT knit him a sweater! I didn't - and we just celebrated our 17th wedding anniversary!
