Digilit Sunday - Capturing Ideas

I love that Margaret Simon has started a Sunday Link Up for posts about digital literacy at her blog to challenge us to share our technology journeys.

Today's post is the result of a need that was created during my commute to and from The Ohio State University to take my daughter to freshman orientation.  She stayed over night, but I drove back and forth since we're not too far from Columbus, but it's far enough that it gave me plenty of time to think.  I always have an audio book playing (on Overdrive, which, come to think of it, would be a good Digilit Sunday post ;-)), but I was still thinking about my own writing ideas as I was listening.  You see, Teachers Write! is going on, and lots of story ideas are swimming around in my head.  Unfortunately, I realized I couldn't write them down while driving, and I was so frustrated.  I KNEW I was going to forget some of my ideas by the time I got home.  While it was too late to do anything about it after that trip, I DID remember, vaguely, a post I read on Jen Vincent's blog during Teachers Write! last year.  I investigated and uncovered it.  You can read it here.

First of all, I loved Amy Pine's suggestion of the Aqua Notes, but they aren't exactly digital.  The app I needed on that commute was Voice Memo, the app Jen suggested.  I couldn't find it in the App Store, so I investigated.  Apparently, it's already built in under Utilities.  I couldn't find that, either, so I investigated further.  From my investigation, I learned how to search my iPhone (I'm sure many of you already know how to do this, but in case you are like me, swipe up and type what you're searching for in the "Search iPhone" space), searched "VoiceMemo" and there it was!  I can't wait to use it!  I DID find Super Note in the App store when searching Voice Memo, so I downloaded it (free).  Jen mentioned Evernote in the post, too, as a way to record ideas.  I've played around with Evernote by keeping conference notes and student notebooks, but for some reason, I didn't think of it for my own writing ideas.  I could have used it in the car since I already have the app for it on my phone, and it has an audio recording aspect.  Oh well.  Next time I'll be READY!  Now I can play around with all three to see what I like best and those ideas I get in random moments or in the car (I sure I hope I continue to get those ideas now) when I can't write them down can be captured by saying them aloud.  Yay!

Please feel free to suggest other ways to capture notes and ideas!

  1. I so love to read your posts because it's like you're just right there talking to me. I usually use notes, but it can be quite hilarious what Siri thinks I am saying. One of these days I may post a hilarious version of a poem that she writes while I talk. Thanks for joining the link up today.

  2. I use my voice memo too. :) I love Margaret's idea of sharing what Siri thinks she's saying. :) Isn't it fun becoming so tech savvy? Before we know it, we'll know as much as our kids do. (Maybe...) Our daughter will be at OSU in the fall too. Once again, our paths cross.
