Slice of Life Story Challenge - What I Know For Sure - Fellowship

It's Day 10 of the Slice of Life Story Challenge, started by Two Writing Teachers.  I am writing around the theme topic of "What I Know For Sure." (See Day 1 for a full explanation.)

True confessions:  I love watching "The Bachelor" and "The Bachelorette."  I know, I know, many of you think it's awful and are shaking your heads right now, and I have to admit, there are moments when I wonder why I watch it.  But darn it, it's so entertaining.  And the best part about it?  Friends.

For years now, my wonderful neighbor, Julie, (on the left), and best friends Jill and Karan (Jill and I have been friends since college, and Karan since grade school - we all miraculously ended up in the same hometown), and Karan's daughter, Molly, and our older daughters who are now in college (we text throughout the shows now), have gotten together on Monday nights to watch season after season.

We have so much fun with it.  We root for our favorites, talk to our daughters about what NOT to do, even fill out brackets (that didn't go so well - we all cheated).  Daughters' friends and even boyfriends have joined us on occasion.  Molly is the youngest out of all the kids, and finally "graduated" to being old enough to watch a couple years ago.  We laugh, roll our eyes at the crazy ones, cry at the cheesy proposals, and live vicariously through Vegas shopping sprees and exotic date locations.

One year, feeling a little guilty about the fact that I watch the show and encouraged my daughters to watch it with me, I mentioned it sheepishly to Libby's youth pastor.  I loved his reassurance!  He said, "Yeah, but do friends come over?"  I answered that yes, they do.  He smiled and responded, "Well then, it's fellowship!" Yes!!

Last night was the finale, and since this season featured Farmer Chris (coined as "Prince Farming" - ha), we fixed farmer-themed food.  I made corn casserole, Julie made "pigs in a blanket," and Molly made cow cupcakes.  We ate, had drinks, and enjoyed the last show of the season, excited that he picked Whitney, and had fun making plans for the next season of "The Bachelorette."

What I Know For Sure: Everything is made more fun and purposeful with friends and family.  Any excuse to get together, laugh, enjoy each other's company, and get away from the doldrums and stress that sometimes creep into our lives, is fellowship. Even if it's "The Bachelor."

  1. "The Bachelor" is often a topic of conversation the next day in the teacher's lounge at our school. I guess it's a kind of fellowship too. I agree that everything is made more fun and purposeful with friends and family.

  2. Holly, As long as we are confessing...my friends and I used to do this with Survivor the first two seasons. It was a great "excuse" to get together. Fellowship and having fun to anticipate with friends breathes life into our living!

  5. The Bachelor and Fellowship, hah the connections you make! But I do agree that anything is made more fun with friends. Wish I lived closer. I might even watch the show if I had cow cupcakes to go with it.

  7. Who would think that those shows would be under the category of Fellowship. What a fun event, Holly. Girls' Night Out-I love it!
