Poetry Month

I must be crazy.  Really.  I should be completely written out after the Slice of Life Story Challenge, but I already miss it.  I don't know if I'll post every day in April, but some fellow bloggers are going to write about poetry and compose some of their own poetry throughout National Poetry Month, and I'm going to join them.  Maybe I'll challenge my students to do the same.  They're going to love me.  Ha.

A form of poetry that has really intrigued me lately is memoir in verse.  Last year during SOLSC I wrote about my childhood, and I'd like to do more exploring and writing around that.  I love writing around photos, though, and since I'm on spring break, I don't have access to my photos.  I'd also like to do some reading of mentor texts that I'd like to emulate in some way.  Those are also at home!  One, though, that comes to mind is Cynthia Rylant's Waiting to Waltz: A Childhood.  Next week I'll try this out.

Since I'm here in Aruba, though, I will write a poem about the sunset I just enjoyed.

A Saxophone Sunset

While listening to the smooth tones
Of a saxophone,
The warm Caribbean breezes
Blow, and
The sun puts on a show.
She blazes mango and tangerine
While settling down for the night,
Turning to whisper pinks
And Easter egg yellows.
Goodnight, sweet sun.
Sleep well.

  1. You could have left out the part...since I'm here in Aruba! :) I love "blazes mango and tangerine" perfect description. Beautiful picture and I am so jealous! I am so glad you are joining in. Like you said, we should be "written out" but poetry uses another set my brain. Should be fun!

  3. "She blazes mango and tangerine" is such a perfect way to describe the Caribbean sunset. It's hard to quit writing once you are on a roll. I am thinking your location should inspire a few poems. Enjoy!

  4. In Aruba! We have snow coming to Denver tomorrow! But-gone by the weekend! No complaints-we need the moisture! This is lovely, nothing like an ocean sunset, but with music too-wow. I love that you included those Easter egg yellows-complete! (Happy you're writing with us.)

  6. Better to be off your rocker, than stuck in it! So you've taken another writing challenge?! Amazing and impressive! I'm thrilled to be following along. This poem was beautiful in the descriptions, and the pacing. Blazing mango & tangerine - brilliant!

  7. First of all, you are in Aruba? How splendid! Secondly, the poem puts me in a whole different place. Thirdly, save this one for the spring gallery that I am starting after Winter Whisperings is unveiled.

  8. I might be crazy too ... I just had to write. Writing every day for 31 days does that too you. But I love that the #digiPoetry is about enjoying poetry without the challenge.

I love Cynthia Rylant and this is a book I haven't seen. I will check it out and your post next week after you write it.

Beautiful poem -- the language and descriptions are just ripe! I mean right! :) Enjoy!!
