#MustReadin2017

Before I share my #MustReadin2017 list, check out Nerdy Book Club today - my 6th graders helped me write a post!  I love the picture books they chose as their favorites.  Now, on to my list.  Thank you, Carrie Gelson, for encouraging us to make these lists.  Research tells us lifelong readers make reading plans, so here are my plans for this year!!

I'm carrying a couple books over from last year's list that I didn't get to but still want to read...

1.

Salt to the Sea Cover

Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys
Everyone says to read this!

2.

Lily and Dunkin Cover
READ 1/10/17
Lily and Dunkin by Donna Gephart
I'm listening to the audio of this book and am captivated by the endearing main characters.

The rest are new to the list!

3.

The Girl Who Drank the Moon Cover
READ 1/14/17
The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill
I'm about halfway into this book and love it.

4.

The Inquisitor's Tale Cover

The Inquisitor's Tale by Adam Gidwitz
This is our staff middle grade book choice for January, and the couple staff members who have already read it LOVED it.  My "kid tester" in 6th grade also raved about it.  A possible Newbery winner?  Can't wait to get to it!

5.

The Lie Tree Cover

The Lie Tree by Frances Hardinge
I've seen this on multiple "Best Of 2016" lists, and I imagine it's a contender for the Printz.  Intriguing!

6.

Snow White Cover

Snow White by Matt Phelan
Lots of buzz around this one!  Several of my #MustRead books are coming from this post by Elizabeth Bird.

7.

Cloud and Wallfish Cover

Cloud and Wallfish by Anne Nesbet

Another Elizabeth Bird recommendation.

8.

Full of Beans Cover

Full of Beans by Jennifer L. Holm

Because duh, it's by Jennifer Holm!

9.

Some Kind of Happiness Cover

Some Kind of Happiness by Claire Legrand

I saw Claire on a panel at NCTE and loved what she had to say.  I look forward to this book!

10.

Falling Over Sideways Cover

Falling Over Sideways by Jordan Sonnenblick

I got this title from the 2016 Young Adult Fiction Nerdies.  I've loved every Sonnenblick novel I've read, so I'm sure this will be no exception.

11.

Still a Work in Progress Cover

I bought this a while ago and haven't gotten to it yet.  The subject matter in this book hits close to home, so I want to be sure to get to this soon!

12.

Throne of Glass Cover

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

I've been wanting to get to the series for a while now.  We picked as one of our books for my Junior High Girls Book Club in the spring.  My daughter, Libby, loved it and has gone on to read the rest of the series.

13.

Moo Cover

Moo by Sharon Creech

I bought this book for my classroom but made the mistake of putting it out before I got a chance to read it.  It's been in kids' hands every since!

14.

The Sound of Gravel Cover

The Sound of Gravel by Ruth Wariner

My book club picked this one for January.

15.

Born to Run Cover

Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen

I bought the CDs of this memoir for my husband for Christmas so we could listen to it on our car trip back to Ohio from Florida.  Bruce reads it.  We were thoroughly captivated by his stories for a full 14 hours.  Unfortunately, it's a 20 hour audio book!  I need to find a way to keep listening - Ed and I need to take another road trip!

16.

Presenting Buffalo Bill Cover

I love Candace Fleming books!  I got to see her at NCTE in a round table session, and she talked about this book.

17.

The Last Fifth Grade of Emerson Elementary Cover

I read a Colby Sharp post and a Donalyn Miller post about this book - how can you resist after those two rave about a book?

18.

Finding Perfect Cover

Finding Perfect by Elly Swartz

This is a 2016 Middle Grade Nerdy winner.  It looks great!

19.

Scar Island Cover

Scar Island by Dan Gemeinhart

I'm reading Some Kind of Courage, one of my favorite books of 2016, to my 5th graders right now.  They are loving it!  I want to make sure I have his newest one on hand after we finish because I know my students are going to want to read all Gemeinhart's books.  The Honest Truth was wonderful, too!

20.

What Elephants Know Cover

What Elephants Know by Eric Dinerstein

I accidentally bought TWO copies of this book - I must have loved the cover!  It's about time I read it!

21.

Upstream Cover

Upstream by Mary Oliver

I love Oliver's poetry, and I know I'll love these essays.  I lent it out to my daughter, Libby, though, so I need to get it back!

22.

Flying Lessons & Other Stories Cover

Flying Lessons & Other Stories edited by Ellen Oh

I'm excited about a book of short stories for middle graders!

Just a few more - these are books that aren't published yet that I can't wait to read!

23.

Short Cover

Short by Holly Goldberg Sloan

24.

Orphan Island Cover

Orphan Island by Laurel Snyder

25.

The Inexplicable Logic of My Life Cover

The Inexplicable Logic of my Life by Benjamin Alire Saenz

Okay - I'm going to stop there!!  Here's to lots of reading in 2017!!

  2. Short and Orphan Island are both showing up on a lot of lists. They are both on mine. I read Full of Beans over the holiday break. I don't know why I had put off reading it for so long. I thought it was funny and interesting. I think it was the cover that kind of just didn't intrigue me. I should know better than to judge a book by its cover!

  4. We have so many of the same books on our list. One of my students read Still a Work in Progress over the break and loved it. I also picked up Some Kind of Happiness and need to put it in my stack. I got The Girl Who Drank the Moon from the library yesterday. Look forward to sharing our reading as the year goes on.

  5. We have a few of the same titles! Throne of Glass was given to me by a first year teacher. I need to get to that one! Moo and Still a Work in Progress are titles I'm going to add to my Goodreads. Happy Reading!
