It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

These are memes started by Teach Mentor Texts and Book Journey, and I'm excited to participate, along with many other bloggers, in reviewing books I read the previous week. I'll be reviewing picture books through adult books.

Maple

Maple by Lori Nichols



What a sweet story! I have a soft spot for trees, so Maple's friendship with her tree seems perfectly natural to me. This is a great book to share to talk about circular structure and personification. Beautiful illustrations!   This book reminds me of Sophie's Squash by Pat Zietlow Miller.
Hi, Koo!: A Year of Seasons

Perfect for National Poetry Month!  Clever and sweet compilations of haiku (with which Muth explains he took liberties, concentrating on sensory details instead of rules) encompassing all the letters of the alphabet and seasons. Koo is adorable.
MIDDLE GRADE
Mr. Popper's Penguins
Mr. Popper's Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater


I listened to the audio of this book, which I'm embarrassed to say I've never read until now! It's a cute story about a frustrated adventurer and explorer, Mr. Popper. The penguins are adorable, and their antics are hilarious, but the whole thing (especially the Poppers' marriage and roles) seems quite outdated now.  Students still enjoy it, though.

    I just loved Maple! Loved the story, beautiful illustrations! I have Grasshopper Jungle waiting for me. I've heard quite a buzz about that one! I bought Gemini too! You'll have to let me know what your mom thinks of it :)

    Maple looks adorable. I have a few trees I love! I am curious about The Selection. The covers of these books are so gorgeous. Love the photos of your kids with their books! They sure are reading some fantastic titles! Those spin cams made me dizzy! :-)

    Yep, I posted on your IMWAYR from last week. I thought to myself, "Hmmm…I thought she read that last week too, but maybe I didn't notice that she was midway through." Can I just say how obsessed I am with these SPIN CAMs? They are so awesome. I can't wait to share them with my pre-service teacher students. :)

    Zen Shorts is a favorite of mine, so I'm excited to read Hi Koo. I always read Mr. Popper's Penguins to my 3rd graders and they loved it!

    Hi there Holly. Jon Muth is a favourite and I've been seeing Hi Koo being featured for quite awhile now. I hope I can find it in our libraries soon. Mr Popper's Penguins also looks like a winner - what wondrous photographs of your students with their books - that's truly precious. Hope you're enjoying Grasshopper Jungle!
