Nonfiction Wednesday

I'm excited that Alyson Beecher, at Kid Lit Frenzy, is continuing her Nonfiction Picture Book Challenge for the third year in a row.

Here is the nonfiction I read last week:

Flight of the Honey Bee

Flight of the Honey Bee by Raymond Huber, illustrated by Brian Lovelock

I love books about bees. They're fascinating creatures. This one is beautifully illustrated with lots of interesting facts about bees and a story told from the point of view of Scout, the bee. Bright colors of oranges, blues, and greens grace the pages as we follow Scout through the day. Pair this up with The Hive Detectives: Chronicle of a Honey Bee Catastrophe by Loree Griffin Burns, a great book on honey bees.

2013-book, animals, art, intermediate-kids-book, nonfiction, nonfiction-challenge-2014, science

This is an unbelievably comprehensive and beautiful book on animals of every kind, shape, and size. Steve Jenkins is brilliant and so talented. I got this copy from the library, but I will buy it the next time I'm at a book store. My students will LOVE it!! The cut- or torn-paper collages are stunning and the information is fascinating. There are timelines, facts galore, and even a book-making section in the back. A thorough glossary is included, too. I know a few kids who will spend lots of time pouring over the gorgeous, must-have book.

What nonfiction are YOU reading this week?

  1. Yes, bees are so fascinating to us- there is always that little bit of danger along with all that sweet honey! I've requested the book from my library, but it takes so long. You might want to pair this with a post from Wonderopolis about what bees do in winter. http://wonderopolis.org/wonder/what-do-bees-do-in-winter/

  3. I am reading the Animal Book with my own children - a few pages at a time each evening and we are loving it. What a treasure. I want to get my hands on this book about Honey Bees - my post was about bees today too! I find bees so fascinating!

  4. I loved listening to Jenkins talk about making this book while at NCTE. It was so fascinating. And he is so mellow which he probably has to be in order to do this kind of work.
