Celebration Saturday

Discover. Play. Build.

I'm so happy that Ruth Ayres started a Celebrate Link-Up on her blog!!!  I will be joining the celebration every Saturday!!

Things I'm celebrating this week:

This week, coming down from a fantastic spring break in St. Kitts with my family, was not easy. It wasn't easy for my students, either.  We were all used to a week of sleeping in, flexible schedules, relaxation, family time, and fun.  Getting up super early and working again was difficult for everyone - teachers and students alike!  My own daughters had a bumpy re-entry, too.  However, we did celebrate some great work this week.  My fifth graders are done with their memoirs, so we took the time to share them and write comments to each other.  They also celebrated participating in the March Slice of Life Classroom Challenge.  My sixth graders did a great job finishing their propaganda activity by creating word clouds over a product and reflecting on what they mean.  More on that in tomorrow's DigiLit Sunday post.

5th graders sharing and commenting on memoirs:

Celebrating Slice of Life Classroom Challenge: Slicers who wrote all 31 posts got a slice of cake.  I know from experience how hard it was to write all those posts.  These kids were dedicated!  Everyone who participated got a Smarties packet.  I celebrate them - everyone wrote a great many  slices, and they were wonderful.  My goal next year (I will have this group in sixth grade, too) is to set up student blogs, so they can participate in Tuesday Slice of Life, Celebration Saturday, and It's Monday! What Are You Reading all year in addition to March's Slice of Life Classroom Challenge.  I'm excited to read their reflections this weekend about slicing.  I'm celebrating the fact that I wrote all 31 days, too.  It was a great experience.  I ate a slice of cake.;-)

I'm also celebrating our wonderful vacation this week and trying not to feel too wistful about it being over.  We had a wonderful time!

  1. Hooray for those classroom slicers! I didn't realize that you taught both 5th. and 6th. grade, Holly - you see quite the arc of writing development! Looking forward to your Diglit post - we're in the midst of our argument unit, too.

  2. Oh, the happy faces with cake slices. It takes a tremendous dedication from students to write every day. It was tough for teachers too. Looking back it feels good to have all those slices.

  3. I love seeing all the photographs of the kids - cake, sticky notes and big smiles! So impressive all of the writing that was done! Wow. They should be celebrating, indeed!

  4. Isn't that first week back so hard to get back into the groove! Since this was my first challenge, I didn't do the classroom challenge. But seriously considering it for next year. Congrats to all of your writers - job well done!

  6. So beautiful! Love that great video! It looks like you had a great vacation. I had a tough time coming back from Spring Break, and I didn't even go anywhere! You did a great job with your Slices - writing about your memories really did help you see what kind of writer you are! Welcome back :)
