Nonfiction Wednesday

I'm excited that Alyson Beecher, at Kid Lit Frenzy, is continuing her Nonfiction Picture Book Challenge for the fourth year in a row.

Earmuffs for Everyone!: How Chester Greenwood Became Known as the Inventor of Earmuffs

Turns out you don't have to actually invent something to be know as the inventor of it! Chester Greenwood is famous for inventing the earmuff, but he really just improved upon an already invented product - kind of like Thomas Edison and the lightbulb! Meghan McCarthy's humorous illustrations and the story of how the earmuff evolved is entertaining and interesting. Who knew there was a Chester Greenwood Day?! Author's Note and more about patents in the back.

Raindrops Roll

This beautiful book reminds me of the Water Can Be... and A Leaf Can Be... by Laura Purdie Salas in its sparse, lyrical descriptions of nature. The photography is sharp and captivating. "A Splash of Science" is located at the end with facts about each poetic page. This would be a great one to include in my literary nonfiction unit.

What nonfiction have you read this week?

  1. Glad to know about this "earmuff" history, Holly. Several have reviewed the book positively & it looks good. Raindrop rolls does sound lovely. Since we have so little rain here in Colorado, it's nice to have students read poems & then talk about all the feelings about rain from other experiences. Thanks, & have a wonderful day!

  2. I enjoyed this book a lot too Holly. I actually attended college in Farmington where they have the parade. It is a lot of fun! I love biographies about people no one knows.
