#WONDERschools

I'm so excited to be starting Wonder by R.J. Palacio in my classrooms this week!

Wonder

I teach 4th grade gifted reading, and Palacio has them hooked already.  I'm sharing it as a read aloud as an introduction to my empathy unit.  Students have already asked parents to take them to bookstores, inquired about whether or not the librarian has it in the school library, and told their parents about it.  I gathered 7 copies from the Cincinnati Public Library to make available to the parents at the meeting tonight so they could read it, and they snatched them up (parent/student book club maybe?)!  I'm calling the unit "We're all different, but connected."  We'll be collecting sentences (annotating), focusing on making connections (text to text, text to self, text to world, and our new category....text to Minecraft since so many of my students are obsessed with that game - ha!) and writing an extended response over one or two favorite sentences at the end of the book.  I'm so excited to start these incredible books next week!  Small groups will be reading the following:

Out of My Mind  A Mango-Shaped Space The Strange Case of Origami Yoda (Origami Yoda #1) Sahara Special
Joey Pigza Swallowed the KeyRulesAnything But Typical
