Nonfiction Wednesday

Join Alyson and others at Kid Lit Frenzy for a nonfiction picture book bonanza each week!

I read two books this week about GINORMOUS animals that happened to related to each other!

Trapped! A Whale's Rescue

This story was based on a real whale rescue and told in lyrical language. The illustrations are beautiful - they capture the vivid colors and energy of the ocean and the powerful, but docile expressions of the humpback whale. Good information at the back of the book about whales, whale rescues, and the real facts behind the story.

There are several videos out there about whale rescues.

Read an article about the real story here.

Hippos Are Huge!

Hippos are Huge! by Jonathan London, illustrated by Matthew Trueman

This is an entertaining and interesting book about the fascinating hippo. Did you know that whales (along with dolphins and porpoises) are the hippos' closest living relatives? I predict that the pages showing two male hippos fighting by slinging dung at each other will be the kids' favorite part! I had to find a video about it!

And on that note, I will check out other nonfiction picture books this week!

  1. These both look like great animal books!
I am always so intrigued by how they are able to rescue such large animals from such dangerous situations. I think Trapped is one I need to get my hands on.
Hippos are Huge looks interesting as well. Hippos are such different creatures than they are portrayed in cartoons.

  2. Wendell Minor always draws beautifully so I may need to read Trapped. I'm quite intrigued now.
