Slice of Life Story Challenge #15 - We Don't Eat Our Classmates

My focus this month is to explore writing invitations, mostly through newly published picture books, but possibly some other mentor texts as well.

<We Don't Eat Our ClassmatesWe Don't Eat Our Classmates by Ryan T. Higgins
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I love Ryan T. Higgins! His books are laugh-out-loud funny, but this one has a great message, too. Perfect as part of an empathy unit. Loved it!

This post isn't going to have a writing invitation because I just want to write about the place for humor in the classroom. Ryan T. Higgins is the king of great picture book humor!  I love when picture books come along with wry and smart humor because it is the perfect time to talk about irony, hyperbole, puns, surprise endings, sarcasm, etc.  Humor plays such an important role in literature, and it's just plain FUN!  I love when kids are engaged in great literary humor. Usually, I'm accused of loving sad stories (which is true), but I love a good funny story as well!  Who can resist some laughter?!

  1. I've got to get that Higgins book! This is the second reference to it this week (Kristine Mraz was touting it in a PD this week). I love this list. Kids love funny books so much and I just love hearing their sweet laughter.
