Slice of Life Story Challenge #17 - Dear Girl

My focus this month is to explore writing invitations, mostly through newly published picture books, but possibly some other mentor texts as well.

Dear Girl,Dear Girl, by Amy Krouse Rosenthal, Paris Rosenthal, and Holly Hatam
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Loved this love letter to "Girl", but to all kids (and adults) really, giving advice about ways to make life fuller and more joyful while enjoying what makes you unique. Would make a great birthday, baby shower, or graduation gift! It's an extra special book since Paris wrote this together with her late mother, Amy.

Writing invitation: Write a letter of encouragement, advice, and/or affirmation to someone (or something) you love.

Since it is my daughter, Libby's, 26th birthday today, I'm going to write my letter to her.  Happy birthday, Libby!

Dear Libby,

You came into this world on a cold St. Patrick's day, making your voice heard over the anesthesiologist's Irish jig, a green bow placed "in all that hair".  Always make your voice heard!
You've got such great things to say.

Dear Libby,

Don't let the world define who or what you are supposed to be.  Try everything.  Be a dancer, a hockey player, a soccer player, a gymnast, a fencer, a swimmer, a diver, a pianist, a violinist, a traveler, a Christian, a helper, a big sister, a daughter, a niece, a granddaughter, a musical star, a seamstress...

     a runner, a writer, a bride, a graduate, a scholar, a salutatorian, a consultant, a knitter, a dog rescuer, an aunt, a daughter-in-law, a sister-in-law, a friend, a board game player, a trivia player, a video game player, a reader, a wife.

Dear Libby,

Celebrate life and make a splash.  Enjoy the sunshine.  Even the rain (I know you actually like the rain).  Throw your hands up in joy.

Dear Libby,

Decorate in orange and lime green.  Bright pink.  Robin's egg blue.  Wear mismatched socks.  Wear basketball shorts.  Wear a slinky dress.  Dress up as Dolly Parton on Halloween.  Be who you are.

 Dear Libby,

Hold your head up high and smile that dazzling smile.  Be proud but not prideful, and know that you are loved.

Dear Libby,

Dream your dreams, make plans, but try your best to live in the moment.  Time will fly.  Remember to appreciate the normal days.  The important things.  Forgive.  Enjoy the journey.

Dear Libby,

Rock that awesome, curly hair.  Embrace who you are.  Feel beautiful, strong, and continue to work hard. And sometimes, be lazy.

Dear Libby,

Travel and explore the world if you want to.  But also stay home, take naps, cuddle with your dogs, play Super Smash Brothers with your husband, drink margaritas with your mom, and sleep late.

Dear Libby,

Remember sunflowers and laughter when life gets you down.  Always choose kindness, faith, and love.

Dear Libby,

Cherish your dear, old friends and embrace the new.  Spend as much time investing in friendships as you can.  They will be your lifelines.

Dear Libby,

Celebrate your birthday (and everyone else's), no matter how old you get!  They're a big deal.

     Dear Libby,

We are your number one fans and are always in your court.  We'll always love you.   You can always turn to us if you need to.  Happy birthday!

  1. Holly, what a wonderful way to celebrate a birthday-with memories. I remember the wedding photos but loved seeing them again, especially the one with the mother-of-the-bride. These lines stood out: "Celebrate life and make a splash. Enjoy the sunshine. Even the rain (I know you actually like the rain). Throw your hands up in joy." If your daughter is as joyful as you are then, there is a celebration in that.
