The Nutcracker Comes to America: How Three Ballet-Loving Brothers Created a Holiday Tradition

This is the perfect time of year to reminisce about the tradition of going to the Nutcracker Ballet and learn all about it.  It was tradition when Libby and Katie were growing up for us to dress up and go see The Nutcracker every year with friends .  We've seen it many times in Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, and the girls have a Nutcracker collection, so I was excited to hear about Chris Barton's new book about its history.  Barton's strong voice, creative lead, and research about how the Christensen brothers of Utah brought the Russian ballet to America will appeal to many kids who, like my daughters, enjoy the show every year.  Beautiful paintings by illustrator Cathy Gendron grace the pages and bring to life the magic of the ballet.  I had the pleasure of hearing Chris Barton speak about his writing process at NCTE 2015 (on Alyson Beecher's panel) and (shhh!) had him sign two of his books for Christmas Eve presents.  This is also a tradition in our house.  I give Libby and Katie a Christmas-themed picture book every Christmas Eve along with pajamas.  Even though they are 22 and 19, the tradition continues!

  1. My mother collected Nutcrackers and the collection continues with my brother, Holly. What a nice tradition. We took my grandson to the Nutcracker. He was in awe at the dancers, first time to see something like that.

  2. I finally read this book a week or so ago and it was fascinating reading about the American history of it.

  3. I love having books that link to places or events. It enriches the activity and then reminds us again and again of the experience we had together. This is a perfect gift to accompany Nutcracker tickets. And I love that it features male ballerinas. Not too many of those picture books around!

  4. Such a wonderful tradition to have with your daughters. Each year Tammy and her daughter head out to a broadway show in Boston. There is something so magical about the theater.
